Suicide is now the leading cause of death for NC children ages 10-17. Legislation to train school staff to help prevent suicide has stalled in the NC Senate for years.
Please call on your NC Senator to pass this life-saving legislation immediately. Need more info? Scroll to the bottom of this page.
Background on Legislation
The rate of youth suicide in our state has nearly doubled over the previous decade. In 2018, fifty-two North Carolina youth ages 10-17 died by suicide.
Yet suicide is preventable. Kids in crisis need trained, caring adults in their lives who can help them.
Legislation to help prevent youth suicide has passed the NC House multiple times, but the issue is hung up in the Senate. The legislation would:
• Require public schools to develop and implement a school-based mental health plan.
• Ensure the plan includes a mental health training program, and suicide risk referral protocol.
Please call on your Senator today to pass this life-saving legislation.
Suicide is preventable – but not if we do nothing.
